Class Statistics: 1970 vs. Now

By Jeff Johnson

For our 45th reunion, we compiled statistics comparing Yale admissions in 1970, when most of our Class arrived at Yale, with statistics about the students matriculating at Yale in 2019.  For our 50th reunion, we have added to the 1970 statistics and gathered statistics about the class of 2028, which is entering Yale in 2024.

In addition to noting how the numbers have changed, it is interesting to note changes in how Yale and other sources report information.  For example, whereas in 1970 gender and ethnicity were reported as hard facts beyond the control of those admitted, in 2024 they are presented in terms of how arriving students identify.  Also, some statistics reported in 1970 are not reported in 2024, and vice versa.
